How to Convert Bitcoin to USD

Practical Bitcoin guide

To convert Bitcoin to US dollars, multiply the BTC amount by a current BTC/USD reference rate. A real sale can produce a different amount after spread, trading fees and withdrawal charges.

×

BTC to USD

BTC amount × BTC/USD rate = estimated USD value

Example: 0.01 BTC × $60,000 = $600 before costs. The $60,000 rate is illustrative, not a current quote.

÷

USD to BTC

USD amount ÷ BTC/USD rate = estimated BTC amount

Example: $600 ÷ $60,000 = 0.01 BTC before costs.

Use a current reference rate

Bitcoin trades on separate markets rather than at one official worldwide price. Use a recent reference rate with a visible source and timestamp, then treat the result as an estimate rather than an executable offer.

Why the exchange amount can be lower

Spread

The provider’s buy and sell prices can differ from the market reference rate. That difference is commonly called the spread.

Trading fee

A provider may charge a percentage or tiered fee when the Bitcoin is sold.

Network or deposit cost

Moving Bitcoin from a wallet can involve a network fee. Providers may also set minimum deposits or confirmation requirements.

Cash-out charge

Bank, card or withdrawal fees can further reduce the amount received.

Step-by-step calculation

  1. Write down the Bitcoin amount without sharing wallet or account information.
  2. Find a recent BTC/USD reference rate and its update time.
  3. Multiply the BTC amount by that rate.
  4. Subtract the spread, percentage fees and fixed charges shown by the provider.
  5. Compare the estimate with the provider’s final executable quote before confirming.

Reference rate versus executable quote

BitcoinToDollar.com uses a recent CoinGecko BTC/USD reference price. It is not an exchange and cannot guarantee the amount another service will offer. See the price methodology for the formula, caching and limitations.
